How does a person answer that? Hi, my name is Richard, what's yours? Or maybe something more "professional?" President and CEO of Jackson Hole Getaway LLC, based in Jackson Hole Wyoming; experts in lodging reservations for discriminating travelers. Ooh, that was pretty good.
But seriously, if that's possible [those closest to me would say I am an incessant smart-ass], I see myself foremost as an artist. I refuse to categorize my work or lay claim to a "favorite" medium.
Andre Gide is noted as saying "Art is a collaberation between God and the artist, and the less the artist does the better."
My work is indeed based on, and derived from the amazing world that surrounds us; one that never ceases to dazzle me every time I stop to look around. There are so many wonders and oddities in the world, any "true" artist would be hard pressed to find themselves at a lack of inspiration.
"Every child is an artist. The problem is remaining an artist once he grows up." ~ Pablo Picasso
Oddly enough, my writing gravitates towards examining the level of stupidity that mankind is capable of operating under on a daily basis; either missing the spectacle of life or destroying it all together.
On one hand, glorify, and celebrate life and creation, through imagry; analyze the devaluation and destruction of it, on the other.
Here's the usual boring stats:
I was born August 4, 1973 in Tucson, Arizona.
I grew up all over Southern California from Pacoima to Pasadena and Santa Barbara to Beverly Hills with a myriad of step-monsters and other "child care providers."
My first job was making milk shakes at a fast food joint in Santa Barbara when I was 13 and I've done just about everything in between. Guitar salesman, construction, airport security, production assistant in Hollyweird, childrens art teacher, pizza delivery, stagehand, door to door magazine sales, professional chef and christmas ornament maker; does that constitute being an elf... hmmm? I even sold custom made golf clubs "over the phone - cold calls" and actually made quite a few sales; chew on that one for a second.
"School" was never my forte. I visited Santa Barbara High School for a year or so but spent most of my time getting high and surfing. After a short stint at city college and art school, again mostly getting high and raving; I moved to Jackson Hole Wyoming when I was 19 with my older brother and sister-in-law. The plan was to ski for a season and move on... that was14 years ago and I'm still here. I left for a few years to Seattle and became a chef, but I consider this place to be my true home.
I've spent the last seven years as an entrepreneur building several companies and have had the pleasure of working for myself, almost exclusively; picking up an odd job or two to get though a few rough times.
I met my wife the day I moved here and we were married 2 years later. We're celebrating our 12 year anniversary this weekend (11/19/2006). We have two amazing boys that are the joy of my heart.
Let's see... that's it in a nutshell. (that would be me)
Now get out of here and look around the site... go on, bounce hopscotch!
