Are You Building Your Business On a ROCK Or a ROCKing Chair?….

It may feel productive, but look around... is anything getting done?
There are a lot of aspects to building a business and just as many choices of
ways to go about doing it.
In network marketing, you have direct sales or retail, wholesale/resale,
building an organization or a team of distributors, also referred to as
recruiting.
And with all of those, there are various ways to go about doing them. Some
people sell their goods/services at trade shows, home shows, or health fairs.
Some align themselves with professionals such as chiropractors, fitness
trainers, massage therapist, IT consultants, life coaches, doctors, etc.
Others build their business online… utilizing systems and processes to
leverage technology and automate some of the common task of recruiting or
retailing, finding new customers and generating business leads.
The list can go on and on. There are literally thousands of ways to build your
business; online and offline.
All of these options have opened the door for more people than ever before in
the history of mankind to become entrepreneurs. The door of opportunity is
literally wide open. The gates have been kicked down and EVERYONE now has an
equal opportunity to create a home business of some sort.
But along with all of these choices and options comes a strong need for focus.
“BUILDING ON A ROCKING CHAIR”
Our pastor said something in church Sunday…
“Worry is like a rocking chair… you can be moving all the time but you aren’t
getting anywhere.”
And that made me think of the trap many people fall into when they set out to
build a business. Maybe you’ve heard of “analysis paralysis?” It’s a subtle
occurrence that bogs us down. Even though at the time, it may feel like we are
being PRODUCTIVE, in actuality we’re simply moving and not going anywhere.
“Being busy is like a rocking chair… You may be moving all the time, but it’s
just not getting you anywhere.”
And many people wind up building their business in this way.
Always chasing the latest greatest system, the new dvd, the new PPC method, the
new business card or postcard design, the latest, the new blog theme, etc., etc.
The problem with this is that many people I talk with or listen to conversations
from all have something in common… their business isn’t going anywhere.
“BUILDING ON A ROCK”
Building on a rock in my mind is all about results. Positive, profitable,
reliable, residual results.
This is where a shift in mindset and processes comes in to play.
The basic difference of building on a rock from a rocking chair is to choose 2-3
strategies and marketing methods to focus on, and no more.
To do this requires a brief period of testing various models.
Maybe you have a capital reserve of some proportion at your disposal; eg. a
credit card or savings that you can use to invest in PPC marketing.
Or maybe you like to write, so you’re going to do article marketing, and
blogging.
Maybe you have the gift of gab, so you’re going to put your efforts into social
media and networking, online and offline.
The point is to quickly get your hands dirty with a few methods to see which
ones you vibe with. Which ignites a little flame inside you that you can be
excited about doing on a consistent basis?
Now pick one. Maybe 2, 3 at the most if you are well disciplined and can focus
your attention and resources on more than one area at a time. But in reality I
would say no more than 2.
Now focus all of your creative energy, resources and efforts on mastering that
thing. If it’s blogging, master it. If it’s writing articles, master it. If it’s
prospecting with postcards, master it. If you choose an online lead generation
system, then master how to use that system from top to bottom.
The point is to focus so much energy at a given strategy that you will know
without a shadow of a doubt, how that strategy works, the best ways to implement
it, what kind of results to expect from it and… does it work for you?
Did you get positive, profitable, reliable, residual results?
Once you have that nailed down, move on to the next strategy on your list.
Repeat the process.
I think you will find quite a difference building your business in a more
methodical way such as this, as opposed to always chasing a strategy or
technique…. Always moving – Going nowhere.
Consistent massive action coupled with laser focus is the surest way to discover
what marketing strategies will really get your business moving towards the
success you expect to attain.
I hope that all made sense and I would love to hear your comments and feedback.
Live Long & Prosper…

I am a total newbie at this – not entirely sure what PPC marketing is yet – but I found solid encouragement and advice here. Thanks. It’s is 1:45 AM right now – I need to come back and reread it and check out the rest of your blog.
Richard,
I bumped into you on Better Networker some time ago, and I’ve got to say that your advice is always clear and very good. What you say makes sense. It’s kind of funny that I just read this post, because I actually just got done writing an article about people who jump from one strategy to the next or one opportunity to the next and never achieve results. Great post Richard.

Have a great day!
Hi Richard,
I’ve enjoyed reading your comments on BN for a couple months now, and finally found my way here. This is a great post. I know for a long time I was using the rocking chair… That all changed a couple months ago and I’m LOVING the change.
Thank you for the solid advice and encouragement. I’ll have to keep up on your writings more, they are always a joy to read.
